What is a Mandala
Apr 05

The word “Tantra” generally refers to a set of ancient mystical Hindu text books which explain certain sexual processes meditations and disciplines. Through these processes sexual love becomes a form of sacrament. In The  Tibetan Tantric customs there is a strong focus on intricate and impressive meditative art. Thes works of mandala art also known as ‘thangka’ paintings are used by priests and religious individuals who hope to find the path to  enlightenment. In this artistic imagery, the deities seen depicted are often found  in ecstatic sexual embraces. These images are not of real people, but instead they symbolize the sacred union of the masculine and feminine principles.

Thus they represent a balance between the two opposing forces with the hope of achieving a blissful state of mind that will allow an individual  to function to their highest human potential.

What is a Mandala?

Good Question, it’s usually a colourful symmetrical piece of artwork.

You could make a mandala out of glass mosaic

In reality a mandala is as much a concept concerning balance harmony and contemplation as it is a physical, visual object. This idea is perfectly indicated by the Buddhist pastime of creating intricate sand mandalas over days or even weeks. at the end of this the sand is simply wiped away, symbolic of the transitory nature of the physical mandala. The mandala concept however remains undisturbed whether the art works exists or not.

What is a mandala?
that is the question right, hmm what is a mandala indeed. Who knows its just a fancy bit of art work which religious people from the East use ?
Well the question is pretty much unanswerable considering the range and variety of uses and situations you can find mandalas. Its not just in religions, its also in secular arts and crafts, like architecture and other forms of modern art. So what is a mandala? is not the easiest question to answer

One of the easiest ways to try to learn what Mandalas are is simply to make your own. A frequent objections is, “I’m not an artist… I can’t draw”
Well everyone has vreativity whatever you may think. mandalas are about symmetry and balance thats all, everyone can make a mandala. An easy way to start is to just draw a circle and fill it with colours. To read more about creating your own mandala easily go here to Ray Whitlings guide

When a person has been through a traumatic emotional experience, it can take a very long time for them to heal. People often rely upon medication but there are also other positive ways to help you to heal the disturbed feelings that may still be lingering inside after a devastating experience, such as separation, divorce and death of someone close to you.

Visiting a counsellor is another way of accessing the pain that a person maybe harbouring inside them or talking with a close friend or family member. Whatever you choose to do, it will take time to unwrap the many layers that need to be worked through before the deepest hurt is released and the wounds start to heal and a Mandala can help you to peel away some of your pain.

You don’t need to be good at art to benefit from a creative holistic experience. The creation of a personal Mandala can both theraputic and healing.

A Mandala takes the shape of a circle and by filling it with colours and symbols that represent how you are feeling at the time of it’s creation you are expressing self awareness, emotion and spirituality from within.

Making a personal Mandala can be like a journey where you are working out in your mind who you are and what is important to you. You may draw a Mandala one day and though it may appear balanced the marks may show some negativity. If you work on your Mandala again a few days later you may be able to explore in your mind ways of balancing out these negative emotions and resolving them with positive ideas to make you feel happier and better balanced.

To create your own Mandala you will need to find the space and privacy where you can allow yourself to relax first of all and then to open up the channel for your thoughts to spill out as a creative image.

There are many good books that will show you how to focus on your inner feelings by creating the kind of spiritual environment required for this kind of holistic experience. Meditation is one way that you can relax and free your mind and allow yourself to bring out your subconscious thoughts.

Music can also help you to create a spiritual environment in which you can allow your feelings to roll out onto paper. When you are in a relaxed state allow your mind to focus on a couple of words that you will have chosen carefully that may describe how you are feeling at the present time. Starting at the centre of your circle fill it in using crayons, paints, chalks collage whatever you feel comfortable using, selecting colours that may symbolise emotions and use images if you wish to represent your inner story or just use shapes and colour to represent your thoughts.

Mandala’s can be quite magical as they can help us to express what we might be unable to say but give us a way to express how we feel through an art form.

If you repeat your Mandala exercise regularly and begin to add positive words to each exercise such as love – caring – compassion – consideration and also releasing words such as peace – forgiveness – harmony – maybe reconciliation, then after a length of time you should feel more positive about yourself and your future and you will find it easier to lay the past to rest.

If you try only this one activity as a different approach to healing, then I’m sure if you persevere with it, you will be surprised at the positive results you’ll achieve.

Mandalas are a very  old art form appearing in different countries and cultures around the globe. There is no set in stone definition of exactly what a Mandala is. In fact they can be seen to emerge organically from the need for human beings to express themselves through patterns in
color, shape and line. Balance is central to the idea of a Mandala and symmetry is also of great importance in deciding what is and what is not a Mandala. They have strong associations with Buddhism and Hinduism and have been used by religious people and monks throughout history in forms of ritual and meditation..
